From more than 100 applicants, 24 students from across the island were chosen to discover more about the Pharmaceutical Engineering Industry and its process at the seventh edition of the Pharmaceutical Engineering Summer Camp (PESCa 2017) here at the Center for Pharmaceutical Development and Engineering (C-PEDaL).
PESCa 2017 had students from 13 towns in Puerto Rico, from Aguada to San Juan to Mayaguez. In this edition, 79% of the participants were women and 21% were men. Like other years, 66% of the participants were 11th grade students while and 33% were 10th grade students.
The summer camp offers different opportunities in which student can learn and apply new concepts of the pharmaceutical industry from manufacture to product characterization. The aim was to provide students the necessary tools to recognize and understand different pharmaceutical processes that range from mixing materials to tablet production and coating.
As part of our objectives, PESCa also seeks to stimulates students and enhance their leadership potential to pursue an engineer career and have an overview of what University is about. This summer at PESCa 83% of our mentors were previous PESCa participants. The mentors were: Shakira Ramirez, Sebastian Silva, Ricardo A. Sanabria, Ramiro Ramirez, Juleika Villarrubia, Jackelyn Ramos, Gabriela M. Gonzalez, Gabriela Del Mar Rivera, Edwin F. Torres, Christian Barreto, Alexandra Espinosa, and Luis F. Torrens. This once again, highlights our commitment to motivate students across Puerto Rico to study and learn the science of pharmaceutical engineering.
In this seventh edition, we had the opportunity to visit Pfizer at Guayama, where students had their first experience at the pharmaceutical industry. They also had the opportunity to receive an introductory talk about the pharmaceutical industry by Ing. Ivan H. Román, Pharmaceutical Industry Asociation Consultant.
This summer camp wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the contribution of Abbvie, Pfizer, Lilly, J&J, Janssen, AstraZeneca, and Pharmaceutical Industry Asociation (PIA).
